The action continues at the Czech Darts Open as Josh Rock has been dumped out and Kim Huybrechts took full advantage of being allowed to compete as a last minute replacement. On Saturday afternoon, he won 6-5 over Luke Woodhouse in the second round.
After a difficult first six months, Huybrechts had to pull out all the stops in the final weeks of the Pro Tour season to get to Alexandra Palace for the fourteenth year in a row. In recent weeks, 'The Hurricane' had narrowly played his way into the provisional field of competitors, but this weekend a golden outside chance to earn extra prize money suddenly arrived.
Due to the late withdrawal of Rob Cross, Huybrechts was added to the field of participants for the Czech Darts Open on Friday, and because the draw had already been completed the Belgian was also allowed to enter from the second round. With the victory over Woodhouse, Huybrechts has already secured 4,000 pounds in prize money, which means he has normally performed enough to be allowed to go to the PDC World Darts Championship
It was the finishes that did the work for Huybrechts, who had an average of 93, but also a 75 percent finishing percentage. The Antwerp native did fall behind by a 128 finish from Woodhouse in the seventh leg, but repaired the damage with a 46 finish in the following leg. Huybrechts then retook the lead with a 16-darter, before Woodhouse forced a final leg with a 13-darter. Huybrechts started the leg decider great with a 180 score and closed brilliantly with a 10-darter for the win.
In the quarterfinals Huybrechts will face Pavel Drtil, who made his debut on the Euro Tour and made it to the last sixteen. After his surprising 6-4 win over Joe Cullen on Friday, Drtil caused a surprise this time by beating former World Youth Champion, Josh Rock 6-5 in the second round.
