Ryan Joyce survived a real scare in his opener at the 2021/22 PDC
World Darts Championship as he saw off Roman Benecky in a sudden death decider.
Joyce produced when it mattered against the Czech qualifier who really grew into the game and came from 2-0 down in sets to send it all the way.
Benecky didn't get into his stride early on averaging just over 70 and Joyce took advantage to take the first set without reply.
A 180 and double 13 saw Joyce hold to begin the second set. Benecky finally got his first leg as he hoped to mount a late charge but it was another maximum to begin Joyce's throw.
After giving Benecky a chance to break, Joyce held to make it 2-1. Benecky began his throw with his second 180 but missed bull to tie it up before giving Joyce a second chance for the set which he took.
It was 1/6 from Benecky who drifted into double one on 108 and Joyce returned for 114 for a break. He missed multiple darts to hold and Benecky replied on double four to break straight back.
Joyce missed darts again to break back and was punished by Benecky who held throw to make it 2-1. He hit a 78 checkout to take a set back.
A 180 and double 16 saw Joyce hold throw as he looked to regain his composure. A 180, 134 and double 12 saw Benecky tie it up once more.
Joyce missed the bull for a 90 checkout and Benecky broke throw as he looked to put it one away from levelling up. A 51 checkout saw the tie levelled up at 2-2 in sets.
Benecky pounced after Joyce missed a chance at a 66 checkout as he held. Joyce made it 8/27 on the doubles as he looked to hold but return to finally stop the rot.
Benecky pinned double 16 to hold with Joyce waiting to break and the Czech ace went one away from an unlikely win.
It was a fifth 180 as Benecky took the game to Joyce but it was 'Relentless' who sent it all the way. A 177 saw Joyce down to 94 on Benecky's throw with the latter not on a finish.
Joyce made it fourth missed match darts but would return with Benecky down at 184 and the North East ace claimed it.
