Luke Humphries has become the first player to secure a spot in the last four at the Winmau World Masters in Milton Keynes. The former world champion won convincingly 4-1 in sets over Damon Heta in the quarter-finals.
It was a strong performance by the world number one, who recorded an average of 104.24 against Heta. In the process, "Cool Hand Luke" also reached six 180 scores, although his finishing percentage of 39 percent could be improved.
Heta took the lead in the first leg with an 84 finish, but Humphries broke right back with a 12-darter and then threw a 106 checkout to win the set 2-1. Humphries then missed two chances to double the lead. Heta therefore kept himself in the match by taking the second set via a 70 check-out.
Set three could have gone either way. Humphries missed four set darts, after which Heta hit a 41 to win the set. His two set chances also went up in smoke, however, after which Humphries hit the double 4 to regain the lead.
That was actually the neckbreaker for Heta, while Humphries also stepped up a level. 'Cool Hand Luke' threw an 11-darter to take the lead early in the fourth set and grabbed the set via a 15-darter 2-0.
In the fifth set, Heta couldn't get away with it either. Humphries kept his own leg with a 15-darter and then scored a 13-darter to close out the match. Sunday night Humphries will play the winner of the match between Danny Noppert and Stephen Bunting in the semifinals.
