Luke Littler is the latest player to hit a nine-dart finish during this year's Premier League Darts. 'The Nuke' raised the roof last night in Cardiff during his final against Michael van Gerwen.
But it also created a record equalling slice of history. He became the third player in this year's Premier League to hit a nine-dart finish. 19 in all have been thrown in the history of the tournament.
In terms of the other record equalling year, it goes all the way back to 2010. Back then Raymond van Barneveld hit one as well as two in the same game from Phil Taylor in the final.
Most other years have seen two a season with an average of just under one each year. Last year saw Gerwyn Price and Luke Littler hit them. But there wasn't any for the year prior.
In 2022, Gerwyn Price had the unique feat of hitting them both and also stopped the rot in 2024. Jonny Clayton and Jose de Sousa were the only other names prior to hit one since 2020. Albeit they did it during the COVID season behind closed doors.
So one more would create a slice of Premier League Darts history. It also sees them gain a reward anyway in the form of the golden darts. Albeit despite winning the 18-carat solid gold arrows, he found out he couldn't throw them.
He joked that it was boring as a result that he couldn't throw them. But the sponsors BetMGM are very much going to be spending a lot of money this year and with the form Littler has demonstrated could yet spend even more.
"It’ll mean everything, it’s a special moment that the sponsors are doing," he said on Sky Sports.
"It goes down to myself and I’m glad I’ve hit one on TV for the first time this year. Not throwable? That’s boring then, innit!," he joked.
