Magnificent Menzies sets up Humphries tie after Zonneveld win, Williams survives Szaganski comeback

The opening session of action is complete at the European Darts Matchplay with Cameron Menzies, Scott Williams and Ian White moving into the second round in Trier.

Menzies produced a statement display to open his account in Germany and will face European Tour leading light and multiple title winner, Luke Humphries in a mouth watering clash. He averaged almost 102 in seeing off Niels Zonneveld 6-3 with three 180's and 60% on the doubles and the Scot will be one to watch this weekend.

As will Scott Williams albeit the recent first time PDC ProTour winner had to seal his opening win the hard way against Radek Szaganski.

He seemed to be cruising at 5-2 up but watched as the Pole started a brilliant comeback which saw him force a decider with a 115 checkout to start it off and in the requisite legs, 'Shaggy' could only pressure as a break at 5-4 proved the catalyst for the decider.

But with Szaganski sat on 60 to take the win, Williams pinned double eight to survive and he will now face Jonny Clayton. While to end the session, it was an impressive display from Ian White who eased past Joe Murnan 6-1. He will face Joe Cullen in Round Two.

This after a 95 average, 42% on the doubles and two 180's in a sparkling display from 'Diamond'.
