The
Slovak Darts Open arrives on the
European Tour calendar with a debut feel running right through the opening round.
Bratislava hosts the tournament for the first time this weekend, with the event adding a new stop to the PDC European Tour and giving several players a fresh stage. Six players are set for their European Tour debuts, while
Mervyn King returns to the circuit for the first time in more than two years.
The 58-year-old faces Andrew Gilding in round one, bringing one of the most recognisable names in the Friday field back onto the European Tour stage. The winner of that match will move through to face 15th seed Luke Woodhouse in round two.
King is one of four players returning after lengthy gaps, with Jim Long,
Owen Bates and
Benjamin Pratnemer also back in European Tour action this weekend.
Six debutants add to Bratislava first
The host nation qualifiers give the opening
Slovak Darts Open an obvious local edge. Gabriel Varaljay, Juraj Holub, Adrian Dudek and Jan Sliacky all enter the main draw as Slovak qualifiers, with each of them preparing for a first European Tour appearance.
Varaljay has been drawn against Cameron Menzies, with the winner earning a second-round meeting against fourth seed Gerwyn Price. Holub faces Rob Cross for the right to play top seed Gian van Veen, while Dudek takes on Dave Chisnall before a potential meeting with Jermaine Wattimena. Sliacky meets Niels Zonneveld, with sixth seed Stephen Bunting waiting in round two.
Tom Sykes and Peter Kelemen complete the group of debutants. Sykes begins against Niko Springer, while Kelemen faces Joe Cullen in another Friday evening match with a seeded player waiting on Saturday.

King return gives Friday familiar name
While the four Slovak qualifiers bring the home interest, King’s return adds a very different thread to the opening day. A long-time PDC figure with deep major-stage experience, he enters the draw at a moment when the European Tour season has already produced a run of different winners and several breakthrough stories.
Long also returns in a tough opener against Daryl Gurney, while Bates faces Kevin Doets and Pratnemer opens against Justin Hood. Each match feeds into a second-round draw that brings in the seeded names, including Van Veen, Price, Michael van Gerwen, Jonny Clayton, Stephen Bunting, Nathan Aspinall, Ross Smith and Wessel Nijman.
The Slovak Darts Open begins with round one across Friday’s afternoon and evening sessions, before the seeds enter on Saturday. The tournament then concludes on Sunday with the third round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
