Rob Cross and
Michael Smith have survived real scares to reach the quarterfinals of the 2024
World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam, with both Englishman having to rely on missed matchdarts from their opponents.
For Cross, Dutch talent
Kevin Doets was almost the end game this tournament. After the first six legs were tied, Doets took a 5-3 lead by throwing a 76 finish and a 14-darter. The Dutchman was then able to finish it off in the ninth leg, but missed four match darts. With a 20-darter, Cross closed to 4-5. Another huge thump followed in the tenth leg. Doets was neatly on tops after four innings, but Cross then fired a 161 finish into the board to force a final leg. That last leg then went to 'Voltage' with a 17-darter.
Smith meanwhile had to face off against another home crowd hero,
Wessel Nijman. Depsite impressing, Nijman, similarly to Doets, failed to issue the final knockout. Nijman fell behind 3-0 against Smith, but came back in the match ironclad. By throwing out 74, 80, 79 and 46, Nijman took five legs in a row, leading 5-3 after eight legs. In the ninth leg, Nijman missed three matchdarts, after which Smith closed to 5-4. 'Bullyboy' then produced a 112 checkout to make it 5-5. In the last leg Nijman missed another three matchdarts, after which Smith took the win.
