Michael Smith nearing Michael van Gerwen's record for longest winning run in Grand Slam of Darts group stage matches

Next weekend the Grand Slam of Darts gets underway in Wolverhampton. Michael Smith starts it as defending champion, after beating Nathan Aspinall 16-5 in last year's final.

Michael van Gerwen, of course, is also seeded for this tournament. The 34-year-old Dutchman won this tournament in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He also achieved another remarkable feat, between 2011 and 2018 he remained unbeaten in the group stage of this tournament for 20 consecutive matches. No one ever did better.

Michael Smith though, is nearing the record of his Dutch rival. 'Bully Boy' has been unbeaten in 16 consecutive matches group stage encounters at the Grand Slam of Darts between 2017 and now, and obviously hopes to extend that 'streak' at the upcoming edition.

Phil Taylor, with six final wins still the all-time record holder at this tournament, once remained unbeaten in 11 consecutive group matches between 2013 and 2016.
