Michael van Gerwen has produced the display which might just hand him an eighth
Players Championship Finals crown, as he came from the brink in some style to deny Stephen Bunting in Minehead.
Van Gerwen by his own high standards has been poor as of late, but as ever he seems to turn it on in Minehead heading towards the end of the year and he came from 9-6 down to defeat Bunting with an incredible conclusion.
To start the tie, it was all Van Gerwen and Bunting himself had to come back into the tie to make it a game. Van Gerwen led 3-2 and 6-4 at the first interval averaging 113 at one point.
But Bunting produced a wonderful 110 checkout to keep on his coattails at 6-5 behind and broke for 6-6 from there to take the impetus.
It was five legs on the spin from there as he hit a 108 checkout en route to continue a superb surge at 9-6 up. But back came MVG in only the fashion he can.
He hit a 91 checkout for a 12-darter to go 9-8 down and hit an 11-darter to make it 9-9 and completed the comeback with an incredible 125 checkout to save his skin. Bunting never got a match dart, but was waiting in most legs to pounce. The Dutchman has dispelled doubts in style this weekend and will look to head towards another major title in a happy hunting ground later this evening.
