Luke Humphries has never been busier, but that made the former 2024 world champion visibly enjoy a rare day of downtime at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Englishman spoke there with
Racing TV about his hectic schedule, his love for Leeds United, and the dream of one day returning to Elland Road with the world title again. “I’ve been busy, but it’s nice to have a day out and enjoy myself here,” Humphries said. “It’s been wonderful so far.”
Working hard equals pay off in rewards
In darts, a packed diary is often a good sign, and Humphries knows that all too well. The current
world number two usually has a crammed schedule on the PDC Tour, but he doesn’t complain. “Being busy is good,” he explained. “As long as you’re busy and working hard, usually the rewards pay off. So yeah, I’m happy about it.”
The trip to Cheltenham didn’t mean he was completely relaxed at the rail. Humphries also had a bet running, although it didn’t quite go his way. “I would have been if Kopek had won,” he laughed. “There was a lot riding on that one, but unfortunately it didn’t come in. But I’m not too far down.”
He stressed, however, that he was mainly there for the atmosphere of the event. “It’s not about the betting for me — it’s about the enjoyment, having fun, and being part of such a global event that everyone loves. So even though it hasn’t really been my day, there are still two races to go.”

Dream of returning to Elland Road
The conversation also touched on ‘Cool Hand Luke’s’ bond with Leeds United. After becoming world champion in 2024, he had the chance to show the Sid Waddell Trophy to the fans at the club’s stadium. A moment he will never forget. “Very surreal,” Humphries reflected. “It was kind of a moment you can only dream of.”
In fact, the Englishman said it felt almost more special than winning the world title itself. “In a weird way, it was almost more special than actually winning the World Championship because it felt like I was having a homecoming. I’ve got a good relationship with Leeds and the fans, and they’re really good to me.”
The darts talent hopes to relive that moment one day. “One thing I’d love to do is parade that trophy around Elland Road again,” he said. “Hopefully I can pick up a few more trophies in between, win the Worlds, and then come back and see you guys at Elland Road.”
Beyond his results, Humphries is known as one of the most approachable players on tour. He values that reputation and has no plans to change. “That’s just who I am,” he said. “It’s something that’s been bred into me for many, many years, and I’ll never change.” Even with a busy schedule and a day off in Cheltenham, he makes time for fans, media, and conversations. “That’s simply part of it,” Humphries said.
