England secured themselves a meeting with Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Wednesday night. As it turns out, the effects of this result have been felt in the darting world as Sunday's planned World Matchplay schedule has been forced into a change.
Gareth Southgate's boys defeated the Netherlands 2-1 at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Wednesday night. After Xavi Simons had given the Dutch an early lead with a thunderbolt from the edge of the box, Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot after a very controversial VAR call. Then with time running out and the Dutch beginning to think of extra time, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins produced a moment of magic to seal a 2-1 win for England and a second successive European Championship final.

As mentioned however, this has had ramifications in the darting world. With the PDC keen for the World Matchplay, which starts on Saturday night, Sunday's double header of sessions will now be brought forward to earlier in the day with all darts intended to be concluded before the 8 o'clock evening kick-off (UK Time) for the final of the 2024 European Championship.
As such, the afternoon session the will be opened by Ross Smith and Josh Rock now starts at 12 noon. After that, it's Danny Noppert's turn to take on James Wade. Dimitri van den Bergh will get the task of upholding Belgium's honour on Sunday afternoon against Martin Schindler. Stephen Bunting and Ryan Joyce will also play in the afternoon session.
In the 'evening session', the darts will now get underway with a clash between former tournament winner Rob Cross and debutant Gian van Veen at 4:30pm in Blackpool instead of the pre planned 7pm. Joe Cullen then takes on Brendan Dolan, while Peter Wright faces Andrew Gilding, with the session brought to a close by Dave Chisnall and Krzysztof Ratajski.
In an added bonus for those with tickets for the evening session the PDC will although all ticket holders to stay in the venue at the Winter Gardens, with footage of the Euros final shown on the big screen. "Following the conclusion of the Evening Session, the UEFA Euro 2024 final will be shown live on the big screens in the arena to allow fans to get behind the England team from their seats without having to leave the venue – and in addition, the food and drink concessions from the Winter Gardens will remain open for the football," the PDC explain.
