Fallon Sherrock will soon begin her fifth crack at the PDC World Darts Championship. The 30-year-old Englishwoman will take on Ryan Meikle in the first round. If she wins, her reward is a duel with Luke Littler round 2.
Sherrock made history on her debut at the 2020 PDC World Darts Championship, becoming the first woman ever to win over a man on the Ally Pally stage. 'The Queen of the Palace' defeated Ted Evetts in the first round and then also won over Mensur Suljovic before finally falling to Chris Dobey in the third round. Expectations were therefore high in recent years, but Sherrock failed to qualify for the 2021 World Darts Championship and in her three subsequent participations she went out in the first round each time, including last year after a 3-1 defeat to Jermaine Wattimena.
"I'm really looking forward to being back at the Worlds. That was my main objective this year, to qualify and I'm just happy that I got there," assesses Sherrock in conversation with Online Darts. "Now I can put the practice in and look forward into going and playing."
Due to health problems, Sherrock hasn't had the best year of her career. "It kind of all went wrong in the middle of the year. Like, it started off well and then it went wrong in the middle of the year and I was second guessing how I was going to finish the year off. So the fact that I dug deep and I managed to get over it, I'm really proud of myself," she says. "I haven't publicized it as such, there's only a few people close to me that actually know about it. But yeah, I did get quite poorly and stuff, but I'm on the mend now so hopefully I can carry onto next year and be better."
As mentioned, Sherrock will take on Ryan Meikle in the first round at this year's World Darts Championship, with the potential of Luke Littlr looming large. "You can't ignore it. You're literally playing one of the best in the world at the moment, but my main thing is my first game with Ryan," Sherrock previews. "He's a really good player and I know going into that game, I need to play my a-game otherwise I'm losing."
Sherrock also isn't looking past Meikle towards Littler either. "People are saying: Oh, you're playing Luke Littler and I'm like, I haven't even won my first game," she explains. "I think it's a bit disrespectful from people, because of the calibre of a player that Ryan is."
Earlier this week, it was announced that women's world champion Beau Greaves would be heading to Q-School in 2025. Sherrock herself has ventured to Q-School several times in the past but is yet to successfully claim a Tour Card for herself.
"I'm going to do Q-School again (in 2025 ed.). Try and do some of the Challenge Tours, see how that goes. I'm not sure if I'm going to do all the Challenge Tours because a lot of the time, it clashes with other stuff that I've already got booked in," she explains. "I don't think I'm doing a lot of the modus at the start of the year, I just need to regroup myself and have a break."
