Peter Wright has taken over second place in the world rankings from Michael van Gerwen after winning the European Championship title. 'Snakebite' could make good use of the winner's cheque of 120,000 pounds, as he has a lot of prize money to defend in the coming weeks.
The world rankings are rankings based on performance over a two-year period. Wright won the Players Championship Finals at the end of 2021 and then also became world champion. With this result, the Scot at least does seem to secure himself a spot in the top-10 of the PDC Order of Merit after the World Darts Championship.
Van Gerwen had to defend a final place from two years ago at this European Darts Championship, but this time he did not advance beyond the last eight. Mighty Mike' went down in the quarter-finals against Gian van Veen. The 21-year-old dart prodigy became the sensation of the tournament with further victories over Damon Heta and Daryl Gurney. Van Veen started the tournament as number 68 in the world, but has now jumped to 56th place on the PDC Order of Merit.
Van Veen eventually lost in the semi-finals to James Wade, who ended up being the losing finalist. Like Wright, Wade desperately needed the prize money for the ranking. Wade had recently fallen out of the top-16 of the world rankings for the first time in seventeen years. With his final place finish, 'The Machine' regained his listing in the top-16 and Wade holds the fourteenth spot.
Ricardo Pietreczko also made another jump. The German surprisingly defeated defending champion Ross Smith in the first round. He rose from 50th place to 45th position.
