With the impending farewell of John McDonald, for many years the face as the PDC's master caller, the darts association is looking ahead to a successor. During the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals, a new face appeared behind the microphone: Lewis Jones. The Englishman appears to be in the picture for the role from 2026, but not everyone is convinced of his suitability. Former professional player
Vincent van der Voort, who has known Jones for years, questions that choice.
Van der Voort spoke about the situation
in Sportnieuws.nl's podcast Darts Draait Door. Despite their long-standing bond, he remains critical. "I know him pretty well and for a long time. He used to be Simon Whitlock's driver and companion. He was also on Modus, the management team I'm also on."
The Dutchman cited an anecdote from their time together on the road, where Jones was the target of teasing during a dinner party. "We always went to eat at Nando's and there we were always driving him crazy. We'd all put some money together so he'd eat the hottest chicken wings. Those things are unbearable, so hot."
The challenge ended in an awkward moment, Van der Voort says. "So the guy had a really hard time, leaning forward, and then someone else gives him a smack in his privates at that exact moment. From whom? Everyone can fill that in for themselves. Then he was lying on the ground gasping for breath and meanwhile he was so hot from the chicken wings. That's not good of course, it can't be right, can it?" According to Van der Voort, that was still one of the milder incidents. "Worse things have happened to him."
As to whether Jones has enough qualities to succeed McDonald, the former player is cautious but clear. "I think he’s a great guy. I get along with him really well. But I don’t know if he has the voice or the presence to do that job. So there’s still some work to be done. That’s just my opinion though—maybe others think he’s fantastic," Van der Voort said.
