Luke Humphries is under heavy pressure in the
Premier League Darts with just four regular nights to go. The defending champion sits outside the top four and must launch a strong late surge in the coming weeks to secure his play-off spot. Analyst Wayne Mardle believes the situation is getting more pressing by the week.
Humphries endured another disappointing night in Liverpool on Thursday. In the quarterfinals, the world number two was
soundly beaten by Luke Littler, who proved far too strong in a 6-2 win. As a result, Humphries remains stuck on thirteen points and slipped back to sixth place in the standings.
Extra painful for the Englishman: he is still waiting for his first nightly title in the Premier League in 2026. While rivals continue to pick up valuable points, Humphries is standing still.
According to Mardle, it is now time for Humphries to act fast if he wants to defend his title. The former professional sees the margin shrinking and that slips are barely recoverable. "Time is running out,” Mardle told Sky Sports.
Laura Turner also thinks one good night probably won’t be enough to turn the tide. "There's four weeks left now, and if he's to have any chance of retaining that title, I think he needs to win a couple of nights," Turner said.
That means Humphries appears to need multiple top performances in the remaining weeks to keep a serious shot at the play-offs. Given his current dip in form, that is no simple task.
Rivals pull away
The defeat in Liverpool stung even more because direct rivals did pick up points. Gian van Veen moved past Humphries in the table thanks to his quarterfinal win over Gerwyn Price.
Michael van Gerwen also made excellent progress. The Dutchman reached the semi-finals and extended his lead over Humphries to five points. That makes Humphries’ task even clearer: even if he wins a night and Van Gerwen fails to score, he only draws level. And with several rivals in form, even that is no guarantee.
Key clash in Aberdeen
A crucial encounter awaits immediately on Night 13 in Aberdeen. Humphries faces Van Gerwen in the quarterfinals, a head-to-head that could have major implications for the standings.
With a win, Humphries can close the gap and breathe new life into his campaign. With a defeat, the deficit could grow significantly. Stephen Bunting also gets a chance to move closer when he takes on Price.
