Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, Luke Humphries and Luke Littler will face each other in a major final Sunday night starting at 7 p.m. The two best darters in the world will compete against each other for the final victory at the Grand Slam of Darts.
At stake is the top prize of £150,000, while the runner-up will have to settle for £70,000. In addition, the winner also gets to take home the Eric Bristow Trophy. Seven years ago, the Grand Slam of Darts cup was named after the English darts legend who passed away in 2018.

Route to the finals

As world number one, Humphries was allowed to start the tournament in Group A. In it, he was joined by Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall and Alex Spellman. Humphries started his pool with a resounding 5-0 victory over Spellman, and was then 5-3 too strong for Michael Smith. In addition, Humphries also threw a nine darter in this game. Because of the other results in the group, Humphries was not quite sure of a spot in the knockout stage after two wins. Against Nathan Aspinall, 'Cool Hand Luke' needed two more legs and 'The Asp' was skilfully pushed aside 5-2.
In the second round, Humphries faced Jurjen van der Velde, the Dutch debutant who had surprisingly qualified for the last sixteen at the expense of Damon Heta. Humphries took no pity on Van der Velde, however, wiping the Dutchman off the board 10-3 thanks to an average of 108.55. Then the former world champion faced Smith again. The English confrontation was won 16-8 by Humphries, who took care of Gerwyn Price (16-13) in the semifinals. With a 106.25 average Humphries also threw his fourth 100+ average in a row.
Luke Littler had a little less trouble getting through the group stage. He started convincingly with a 5-1 victory over Karel Sedlacek and was then already sure of a spot in the eighth finals after winning 5-3 from Connor Scutt in his second match. Via a 5-1 victory over Daryl Gurney, the English teenage sensation then became the convincing pool winner in Group E.
His knockout phase began against Wessel Nijman. A match from which much was expected beforehand, but Littler was already ahead 5-0 after the first session. In the end, it became 10-4 for "The Nuke. In the quarterfinals against Josh Rock, Littler fell behind 6-9, but the deficit was then effortlessly repaired. The reigning world champion conceded only three more legs and triumphed 16-12. In the last four he met Danny Noppert on his way. 'The Freeze' started the match strongly, eventually leading 8-6. However, he could not keep up with Littler's pace, and Littler took the win (16-9).

Sixth major final between Humphries and Littler

It will be the sixth major final in which the two Luke's face each other. The first encounter was at Littler's big break, at the 2024 World Darts Championship. Then it was Humphries who managed to take the world title at the expense of his young rival.
However, Littler took revenge a few months later by beating Humphries in the final of the Premier League Darts. At the end of 2024, the two Englishmen also met in the final match of the Players Championship Finals and this final turned out to be a triumph for Humphries. In May this year, the numbers one and two in the world rankings played each other again in the final of the Premier League Darts. And this time it was Humphries who could lift the trophy.
However, Littler won the last major showdown in the World Grand Prix final. 'The Nuke' triumphed 6-1 in sets at the time, although this result was slightly flattered as almost all the sets went over the full five legs.
Looking at the full head-to-head, the two Luke's have met no less than 26 times in just two years. Sixteen times Littler walked off the stage victorious, and ten times the victory went to Humphries. What is hopeful for Humphries is that he did manage to win from Littler in two of the three major finals between them at a ranking tournament.
