Michael van Gerwen unexpectedly failed to appear at the fourth Players Championship tournament in Rosmalen on Tuesday. The absence was surprising, especially considering the event took place just fifteen minutes from his hometown Vlijmen.
The day before, Van Gerwen had competed in Players Championship 3 but suffered a shocking first-round exit, losing 6-4 to Michael Flynn. Despite the defeat, his close friend Vincent van der Voort, who witnessed the match, believed that "Mighty Mike" had not played poorly.
"He played a fantastic match'', he complimented the Irishman. ''Van Gerwen just couldn't turn it around. All credit to Flynn; it was a great win. Van Gerwen was really upset about it. He immediately said he would come back on Tuesday," Van der Voort shared on the Darts Draait Door podcast.
However, Van Gerwen did not show up as expected. His absence was not related to the cold conditions that several players had complained about. According to Van der Voort, the Dutchman pulled out due to a foot injury, which prevented him from competing.
Van Gerwen has little time to recover, as he is set to travel to Dublin on Wednesday for the third week of the Premier League Darts, which takes place on Thursday evening. Fans will be hoping that his injury does not affect his performance on the big stage.
