For the first time in his career,
Nathan Aspinall is into the
World Matchplay semi-finals. In his corner during his quarter-final win over Chris Dobey was a former multiple time world champion boxer, Ricky Hatton.
"It's great to be here, I've not been for a few years," said Hatton, who fought the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in his prime, to Sky Sports. "There's bigger venues but I don't think there's any better than the Winter Gardens."
On Aspinall, 'the Hitman' was confident about his fellow Stockport native's chances. "He's looking the part to be honest. I think it's a wide open tournament and there's no reason why Nathan can't go all the way with how he's played."
Hatton himself has actually played on the Winter Gardens stage before against Phil Taylor, and as he admits, plays a decent standard. "I used to play for my local pub team in Manchester and I certainly won more than I lost!" Hatton says. "To be honest I think everyone who played me was scared to death."
