The darts season will resume on Friday. Starting at 12 p.m., the German Darts Championship 2024 is on the program in Hildesheim. During the first session on Friday afternoon two Dutchmen will enter the oche. Read our preview here.
Right away in the opening match of the tournament, the first Dutchman will appear. Jelle Klaasen then enters the stage for his match against Nick Kenny. For 'The Cobra' it will only be his first Euro Tour tournament of the season. Klaasen had a fairly solid spring in which he amassed 6,000 pounds in six Players Championship tournaments, but since the summer things have not been going smoothly for the former Lakeside champion. In the last seven Players Championship tournaments he was eliminated in the first round. His upcoming opponent showed some form last weekend by winning the Champion of Champions tournament. This is considered a tough event, with eight matches to be won over best of 3 legs. Kenny is also doing well on the Pro Tour, as he is only narrowly outside the qualifying spots for the World Cup of Darts.

In the second match of the afternoon, Krzysztof Kciuk faces Robert Owen. Kciuk lost his Tour Card after the World Darts Championship and then failed to earn it back at the Q-School. This did allow the Pole to compete at Eastern Europe Qualifier for the Euro Tours, where he secured qualification for this event. Owen had not originally qualified for this tournament, but was allowed to travel to Hildesheim due to several cancellations.
Mickey Mansell will compete against Matthias Ehlers for a spot in the second round. The difference in experience between these two players is significant. For Ehlers, it is only his second Euro Tour entry, while Mansell already has 29 to his name. Andrew Gilding was paired in the draw with Johan Engstrom, winner of the qualifying tournament for players from Scandinavia and the Baltics. As with the previous eight Euro Tours this season, Gilding is automatically qualified for this season. Five times, however, 'Goldfinger' fell in the first round.
Steve Beaton starts his very last Euro Tour tournament of his career on Friday afternoon against Dylan Slevin. 'The Bronzed Adonis' says goodbye to the PDC circuit after this season and failed to qualify for the remaining four Euro Tours. It will be Beaton's 61st participation in a Euro Tour tournament. Twice the Englishman made it to the final, one of which he managed to win in 2013. Beaton is in need of a good result in Hildesheim, though, as he desperately needs the prize money in his fight to still qualify for the Darts World Cup.
Boris Krcmar can get ready for his first Euro Tour entry of the season. The giant Croatian faces off against Stephen Burton, who, like Dylan Slevin, Robert Owen and Mensur Suljovic, was admitted to this tournament because some players had opted out. The seventh duel of the afternoon is between Dragutin Horvat and Krzysztof Ratajski. Horvat managed to qualify for the German Darts Championship through the Host Nation Qualifier, while Ratajski was invited based on his position in the world rankings. 'The Polish Eagle' is currently experiencing a very poor season on the Euro Tour. At the previous seven Euro Tours, Ratajski won only one match.
The afternoon session concludes with an interesting affair between Brendan Dolan and Dirk van Duijvenbode. The latter is slowly getting back on his feet after months of struggling with a persistent shoulder injury. At times we again see the Van Duijvenbode that often played a role in the final stages of PDC tournaments. Dolan surprisingly won a Players Championship tournament in May, but after that 'The History Maker' hardly gets any notable results. In the last eleven ranking tournaments, Dolan only got past the last 32 once.
The German Darts Championship will be broadcast on PDC TV. As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the German Darts Championship consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start daily at 13:00, while the evening sessions start at 19:00.
The first round will take place on Friday. The 16 Order of Merit qualifiers and the winners from the various qualifying tournaments then make their appearance. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. Sunday will see the denouement of the tournament, starting with the third round in the afternoon session. Sunday evening will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
At this Euro Tour tournament, a total of £175,000 in prize money will be divided among the 48 participants. They will receive at least 1250 pounds in starting money. The top-16 seeded players who enter the German Darts Championship from the second round will receive 2,500 pounds anyway.
They do - like the 16 Order of Merit qualifiers starting in the first round - have to win their first match in order for the prize money to count toward the world rankings and the other rankings. The winner of the German Darts Championship 2024 will ultimately go home with the top prize of 30,000 pounds.
