A delightful line-up is on the cards Saturday night for the final matches of the second round of the
Hungarian Darts Trophy 2024. No fewer than six (former) world champions will be in action at the Euro Tour tournament in Budapest.
The evening gets underway with a battle between Danny Noppert and Nathan Aspinall. The latter made his return to the darts circuit this week after being out of action for a month and a half due to an arm injury. Aspinall won 6-3 over Krzysztof Ratajski in the first round, while Noppert had a bye.
Peter Wright appears on stage in the second match. The recent German Darts Championship winner endured a tough match against Joe Cullen in the first round. 'Snakebite' was behind 4-5, but saved himself with two 12-darters in a row. Now Damon Heta, the number eight seed, awaits.
Defending champion Dave Chisnall enters the MVM Dome on Saturday night for his match against Jonny Clayton. 'The Ferret' already has one match in his legs. He recorded a 6-3 victory over Michael Smith in the first round. Chisnall is chasing his third Euro Tour title of the season in Hungary, after already winning the European Darts Open and Flanders Darts Trophy earlier this year.
Wessel Nijman gets a chance to prove himself against
Gerwyn Price. Nijman had a breeze in the first round on Friday. He won 6-0 over Hungarian qualifier György Jehirszki. A win over Price would put Nijman in the final day of a Euro Tour tournament for the first time in his career.
Right after Nijman, it is the next Dutchman's turn. After a 6-3 victory over Ritchie Edhouse, Ross Smith is Raymond van Barneveld's next opponent. Earlier this year the two players already fought a bitter battle at the Austrian Darts Open. Then the victory went 6-5 to Smith.
Last year
Luke Humphries was close to the title in Budapest, but then he lost 8-7 to Dave Chisnall after a thrilling final. This year, the reigning world champion gets another chance to lift the cup in Hungary. Gabriel Clemens is his first opponent at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. The German was responsible for the elimination of Dirk van Duijvenbode (6-1) in the first round.
Michael van Gerwen tanked a lot of confidence ahead of the trip to Eastern Europe. Last Wednesday, Van Gerwen won the 21st Players Championship tournament of the season. It was his first Pro Tour title in nearly a year and a half. The 35-year-old player from Vlijmen opens his tournament against Martin Lukeman, who dealt with Brendan Dolan in the first round.
The evening concludes with a meeting between Rob Cross and Andrew Gilding. For Cross it will be his first match this tournament. Gilding already came into action once and managed to win from Dimitri van den Bergh in the first round.
TV and live stream
The Hungarian Darts Trophy will be broadcast on
PDC TV. As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the Hungarian Darts Trophy consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start daily at 12:00, while the evening sessions start at 18:00.
The first round will take place on Friday. The 16 Order of Merit qualifiers and the winners from the various qualifying tournaments then make their appearance. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. Sunday will see the denouement of the tournament, starting with the third round in the afternoon session. Sunday evening will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
Distribution of prize money
At this Euro Tour tournament, a total of £175,000 in prize money will be divided among the 48 participants. They will receive at least 1250 pounds in starting money. The top-16 seeded players who enter the Hungarian Darts Trophy from the second round will receive 2,500 pounds anyway.
They do - like the 16 Order of Merit qualifiers starting in the first round - have to win their first match in order for the prize money to count toward the world rankings and the other rankings. The winner of the Hungarian Darts Trophy eventually goes home with the top prize of 30,000 pounds.
