An attractive program awaits us Sunday night at the World Darts Championship. The "Queen of the Palace" returns as does the big favourite for the world title.
However, we begin the evening with a duel between Dylan Slevin and Florian Hempel, two Pro Tour players. Slevin actually managed to qualify for the World Darts Championship via the Pro Tour. Hempel did not succeed, but the German succeeded at the last chance Tour Card qualifying tournament. Dimitri van den Bergh awaits the winner in the second round.
Niels Zonneveld begins his third appearance at the World Darts Championship on Sunday evening. In his previous two appearances, Zonneveld failed to win a set at the World Darts Championship. He lost to William O'Connor (3-0) and Lewy Williams (3-0). His opponent, Darren Webster was a quarterfinalist at the World Darts Championship in 2007 and 2018, but has slipped considerably in the last three years. Through the Tour Card qualification tournament, 'The Demolition Man' unexpectedly forced his way into the World Darts Championship.
In the third match of the evening, Jermaine Wattimena takes on Fallon Sherrock, one of two women at this tournament. For Sherrock, it is a return to the spot where she made history four years ago with victories over Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic. The task for Wattimena is to quiet the crowd. If Sherrock can keep close, the crowd could become a factor.
In the final match of the evening, title favourite Luke Humphries will be in action. 'Cool Hand Luke' emerged as the top player in the world of darts in recent months with overall wins at the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Finals. He will face Lee Evans. Evans won 3-0 in sets over Sandro Eric Sosing in the first round on Saturday. Both Englishmen know each other well. In the past, they have played many pairs matches. Now, however, Evans will have to go it alone against the world number three.
