Lourence Ilagan finally has a win at the Alexandra Palace at the seventh time of asking after seeing off Rowby-John Rodriguez in the first sudden death of this year's
PDC World Darts Championship.
Ilagan went 2-0 up but Rodriguez came back into the tie and was on top from there only for 'The Gunner' to show superb resolve to finally seal victory. He faces Dimitri van den Bergh in the second round.
Ilagan hit an 88 checkout on double seven to hold throw. Rodriguez missed 155 on double 19 but returned for the same target to level up.
Rodriguez missed a chance to break and Ilagan pinned 56 for a 2-1 lead. A 64 checkout on double 20 saw him seal it.
A 66 checkout saw Ilagan continue a run of three legs in a row. A 116 checkout saw him consolidate and go one away from a two sets lead.
Ilagan missed 121 on the bull and Rodriguez held for 2-1 down. After multiple pauses on 140, Rodriguez finally got a 180 not looking round. He got a dart for 2-2 and Ilagan pinned 60 for a 2-0 sets lead.
Ilagan missed two at double 20 and opened the door for Rodriguez to throw for a set back at 2-1 which he sealed with an 80 checkout.
A 58 checkout saw Rodriguez open up the fourth set 1-0 up and it was double 20 again for 2-0 as he looked to force a decider.
Ilagan missed bull for 85 and Rodriguez hit double two to send it all the way. Rodriguez continued his resurgence with a break on double 18 to go two away.
Rodriguez missed 62 to go one away but so did Ilagan. Three darts came and went for Rodriguez as well though and Ilagan broke.
After an edgy leg, Ilagan went one away with an 80 checkout. But Rodriguez took it all the way with a 54 checkout. 105 left 36 for the match for Ilagan and he pinned it.
