The fans at the Mattioli Arena gave their opinions on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer while watching Stephen Bunting and Danny Noppert face off on stage at the
World Grand Prix, not holding back in their views on the politician.
Noppert caused a shock by knocking out the world number four. Despite Bunting pinning a 125 to stay in the match, the Dutchman proved too strong, with Bunting also having struggled with back issues. However, this surprising result did not catch the headlines it may usually do.
During the second set, the fans in the venue started singing: "Kier Starmer is a w****r" to the tune of the Seven Nation Army song 'The White Stripes.' Frantically, the broadcaster Sky Sports implemented generic crowd noises over the top, preventing the viewers watching on tv from hearing the chant.
While this stopped people viewing it on TV from hearing what was being sang, it soon posted all over social media, showing what was chanted in Leicester. This replicates Starmer's current popularity in the country.
Darts fans are known to cry out a range of songs, but not normally these are political or even bad enough to force swift action from broadcasters such as Sky Sports. This is not the first time something similar has happened at the darts. Back at the 2022 World Championships, the fans in Ally Pally sang: "Stand up if you hate Boris," referring to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, linking back to the controversial scandal involving him and many other politicians partying and not following social distancing rules at Downing Street during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is yet to be seen whether similar chants will be echoed around Leicester for the rest of the week, as the best players in the world challenge for the
World Grand Prix title.
