Tabern went into his final game needing to claim the tie after Mike van Duivenbode survived four match darts against Kirk Shepherd and closed out a 5-4 victory to go top of the standings.
Simon Whitlock his opponent himself still harboured a slim hope of claiming it but Tabern claiming four legs ruled it out. This came after 'The Wizard' himself missed three darts to break. One more leg saw him claim what he needed.
The St Helens ace though was still to falter as he missed two darts to win the match and the group and Whitlock forced a decider but the former didn't miss a second opportunity and claimed the tie and the group ahead of Van Duivenbode.
Kirk Shepherd finished third after one win and two defeats ahead of Simon Whitlock who had the same and did not live up to his favourite tag.
Tabern will now join the likes of Nathan Aspinall and his fellow St Helens ace, Dave Chisnall as part of the current 11 who will go into the next round.
