Of the 32 participants at this week's European Darts Championship, only two players will make their first appearance at the
European Championship.
Gian van Veen and
Ricardo Pietreczko are the two debutants. Pietrezcko played eight Euro Tour tournaments this season, and had his highlights at his first and last tournament. At his first Euro Tour tournament of 2023, he reached the quarter-finals.
At the last event, Pietreczko caused a huge sensation by winning the German Darts Championship. This made him the fourteenth player to qualify for the European Darts Championship. It earns him a meeting with defending champion Ross Smith.
Van Veen only made it to one of the first eight Euro Tour tournaments of 2023, but was a regular at the last five Euro Tours. At the European Grand Prix and European Darts Matchplay, Van Veen made it to the last eight, while at the German Darts Open, Hungarian Darts Trophy and German Darts Championship the Dutchman managed to advance at least one round each time. Van Veen eventually finished as number 27 on the Euro Tour Order of Merit. He will face Damon Heta in the first round.
