Niko Springer caused a stir at the
Hungarian Darts Trophy on Friday evening. The German defeated Gian van Veen 6-3 in the first round. The Dutchman played with an average of 106, but still couldn't win. Springer impressed with his enormous coolness on the doubles and made use of almost every opportunity that came his way.
Immediately after the match, he answered questions from MC Philip Brzezinski. When Brzezinski mentioned that van Veen had played the significantly better average, Springer reacted calmly: "To be honest, I'm not interested in these statistics. It's all about hitting the doubles at the right time. I'm very happy that I managed to do that. It was a funny game, like you said. It could have gone either way - mine or his. I'm glad it ended in my favor."
Springer also answered the question of how he was able to remain calm after falling behind early with confidence. "I tried to remember that I had won more times against him than he had against me. I tried to build up my confidence and I never gave up. That was important for me and I think I showed it. I'm very happy."
With this victory, Springer moves into the second round, where a real heavyweight awaits him on Saturday evening. At 7 pm he will face Damon Heta. The Australian is one of the most consistent players on the tour and will demand everything from Springer. But after this performance, Springer knows that he can also hold his own against "The Heat" with a strong double rate.
