From playing in Manchester in the Premier League Darts on Thursday night to
European Tour action on Friday evening back in his native Belgium,
Dimitri Van den Bergh was feeling the nerves in front of a home crowd.
“I slept from 10am to 4pm. Six hours, but really heaven on earth at that moment,” Van den Bergh revealed post-match. “A pillow has never felt so airy. That was also the case last week, but different. Then I could also sleep at night, just not now. That is something mental, but that makes me even more f*cking proud that I was able to win here.”
A first-round win over Ian White saw the Belgian safely through to the second round of the
Belgian Darts Open and all things considered, Van den Bergh was happy with his performance. “I had to work and do my job, but above all I believed in what I can do. You should never underestimate anyone, but you should never underestimate yourself either. We are fighters, as Belgians," he says. "There are plenty of people who try to take us down, but that's what we get strength from. We're going to try to prove everyone wrong, always. But, and I have to be honest: it was more 'Nervy Dimi' than 'Dancing Dimi'. I'm standing here in a sweat, but it was a great experience."
"The crowd supported me, chanted my name. I started great, but somehow I was less in control. I really had to work though. In the end I win 6-1, but I could have been 1-2 behind. The nerves are still there now, but I did it. What a great feeling!” Van den Bergh continues. "And now? The three of me, White and Michael Smith were at the airport last week. I said: Ian and I play each other in Belgium next week, and then Smith. And it was still true. They then asked me to predict the lottery numbers. But we'll see. It will be hard work, but we are here for our own wallet.”
