Dirk van Duijvenbode and Joe Cullen are the final two players through to the Quarter-Finals of the Players Championship Finals with the former in particular impressing in a Game of the Year contender.
In a match that was surprisingly not on the Main Stage, Van Duijvenbode proved he is a contender for the title in an epic win over Ryan Searle breaking the record for highest ever match average in this tournament with 112.05.
He hit an incredible 11 180's and 55.6% on the doubles on the outer ring with Searle himself producing 10 and four ton-plus checkout despite being defeated 10-9.
Moving 4-3 ahead in the early going including two ton plus checkouts, Searle was averaging 110 and taking the game to Van Duijvenbode. Breaking at 5-3, he started to edge ahead and went 7-3 up but an 11-dart break in the form of an 81 checkout and a hold brought Van Duijvenbode back to within two.
Back to back incredible legs in the form of a 78 and 146 checkout suddenly saw Van Duijvenbode level only for Searle to hit 121 which he pinned again making it three for the contest and going one away at 9-8 but Van Duijvenbode forced a decider and produced when it mattered most hitting a 180 then 138 to leave double 20 pinning double 10 for the win.
While over on the Main Stage, Scott Williams' run came to an end at the hands of Joe Cullen who moves into the Quarter-Finals tomorrow as one of the top contenders sealing it 10-7.
Cullen did it in style hitting two double 20's for a 137 checkout for victory after pulling away initially at 6-4. It was a resurgent effort for Williams who reduced the deficit but a 113 checkout stopped him in his tracks.
This lead went into one away soon after with Cullen making it 9-6 and Williams needed four on the spin which he couldn't get and 'The Rockstar' keeps his hopes alive of a second major title of the season.
