Michael van Gerwen was not at the races for the most part against Peter Wright but produced when it mattered to dispel Peter Wright in a repeat of their World Championship final.
It was Van Gerwen who claimed the victory though this time as he added two points onto the board as his Premier League title defence begins. This included a 104 average, four 180s and 7/9 on the doubles.
Wright was on world class form to begin the contest as he heaped the pressure on Van Gerwen who was just not producing the goods.
'Snakebite' went into a 2-0 lead early doors hitting an excellent 120 checkout and averaging around 112. Wright though missed a golden opportunity to go into a 3-0 lead and Van Gerwen punished smashing in a 106 checkout.
Mighty Mike heaped on the pressure with a 171 and this worked as he broke on double four to make it 2-2. Wright missed more darts and Van Gerwen made it three on the spin with a 120 checkout.
'Snakebite' hit back with a 58 checkout finally stopping the rot but only after Van Gerwen missed darts to break. MVG held to keep his lead and Wright started to falter a bit and this allowed MVG to kick off 180.
Two 180s though saw Wright leave 16 to make it 4-4 and he converted this. Wright had his back against the wall and he smashed in a 157 checkout to make it 5-5.
Van Gerwen assured himself of a point though with Wright having an off leg and he smashed in a 106 checkout to defeat 'Snakebite'.
