Van Gerwen set to miss first part of Winter Series

Michael van Gerwen will not be involved for at least the first part of the PDC Winter Series as he recovers from a recurring back problem which nearly kept him out of the latter stages of the World Cup of Darts.

Van Gerwen was medically assessed and decided to play and the morning after, speaking to De Telegraaf, the World Number One admitted he feels better but will take extra rest.

"Things are going much better," says Van Gerwen. "Yesterday I had everything checked in the hospital and there were no bad things to see."

“I'm going to wait the next days and see what I will and will not play. First, I'm taking a rest."

As a result, he will travel to Coventry on Thursday at the earliest which would mean he would miss at least the first three days and he would then potentially be involved on Friday and Saturday (Day 4 and 5) pending a negative COVID test.

But with the Grand Slam of Darts on the horizon also at the Ricoh Arena and starting on Monday, his attention will likely turn to that and getting ready for the next major tournament.
