Van Gerwen sets up clash with Van Barneveld after defeating Doets, Price wins five legs on the spin to see off Lowe

Michael van Gerwen got through his first round at the Players Championship Finals quite easily. Mighty Mike defeated compatriot Kevin Doets 6-3.

Van Gerwen, the defending champion in Minehead, took a 2-0 lead with finishes of 129 and 92 and with an 82 check-out he moved to 5-1. Doets reduced his deficit to 5-3, before Van Gerwen decided the match with a 113 finish.

The 32-year-old Dutchman will take on Raymond van Barneveld in the second round. It will be the first clash between the two Dutch giants since Barney made his comeback on the PDC circuit earlier this season.

Title favourite Gerwyn Price also made it to the last 32. Price was 1-3 behind against Jason Lowe, but then won five legs in a row to take the win. Luke Humphries beat Jason Heaver 6-4, while William O'Connor edged out Chris Dobey after a deciding leg.
