Michael van Gerwen opened up his International Darts Open campaign in Riesa with a 6-5 win over Matt Campbell but survived match darts in the process against the Canadian who is not using his own darts due to his luggage not arriving.
For Van Gerwen, he produced a 102.3 average and six 180's to move through with Jose de Sousa next up for 'The Green Machine'.
Campbell kept pace all the way through and looked to seal a pivotal break at 5-4 and was throwing for the win but didn't get a chance with a superb 11-darter from MVG sending it all the way.
Left 87 for the win, Campbell did the first part right hitting the 51 for the double 18 but missed two darts for the match and last dart in hand off 60, Van Gerwen snatched it 6-5.
While his rival, Peter Wright produced a resurgent display after his form struggles of late seeing off Jose Justicia 6-3 with three ton plus checkouts.
This included a 145 to win as 'Snakebite' looked more like his old self going into the final day of action.
