Michael van Gerwen is successfully through to the Last 16 at the 2020 PDC World Championship as he defeated Ricky Evans in a clash which can be described as only one word rapid fire.
Van Gerwen claimed a 4-0 whitewash over the Kettering ace with a 96.7 average and ten 180s as he enjoyed the pace throughout meaning barring a small wobble towards the end when it looked like he would lose a set which he soon corrected, he barely looked troubled.
To begin the tie, Van Gerwen started off well hitting a 180 but when Evans missed a dart at the bull to break the throw, the former claimed the leg.
MVG hit another 180 as Evans registered his first maximum of the contest as he attempted to hold. He left 24 with Van Gerwen back on 206 and so he tied it up at parity in the early going.
It was three 180's in three legs as Van Gerwen held throw again with ease with an 85 checkout. Evans didn't play well on his own throw but missed double 20 for a 160 checkout, this wasn't punished by MVG though who couldn't hit 62; the Kettering ace as a result held his throw.
Evans kicked off 180 to make it the 500th of the tournament but Van Gerwen hit a 174 which put him down to 114. The former couldn't get a shot at 121; Van Gerwen got away with it holding throw on double 20.
Evans had the throw in the next set; despite that a poor leg which saw some misfortune among that allowed Mighty Mike to break with an 80 checkout.
He kicked off his throw with a 180 to show no resistance to 'Rapid'; he hit a 90 checkout to go one away from a two set lead.
A 180 pressured Evans but he hit a 101; he then gave a smirk over to the camera. This did not deal Van Gerwen a blow; as he began with a 174.
Van Gerwen couldn't hit a 135 checkout; but Evans missed a 170 checkout on the bull and this allowed MVG to pin a 41 checkout for the second set.
Evans was miles back and on throw Van Gerwen smashed in a 41 checkout. A seventh 180 rained in as Evans began to falter; as a result he only left himself 119 on throw and he pinned it in rapid fire style.
Evans danced behind Van Gerwen as he threw; then both players exchanged 180's which threw MVG off and allowed the Kettering ace to break with a 61 checkout.
Evans left himself on 188 on throw; MVG was on 114 and he capitalised breaking back. He now had the darts to go three up.
Van Gerwen had three in the treble 19 on throw; but two fell out giving Evans a potential chance as he was left on 82, he couldn't hit it though leaving MVG 130 but he missed double five for the set.
Evans missed three at double ten for the set but MVG expertly left himself double one from a poor ten checkout as he went 3-0 up in sets.
Van Gerwen went for a trick shot double 19, double 19 but this wasn't punished by Evans who missed double 12 but he didn't miss second time hitting a 75 checkout to break throw and go two away.
Evans missed a 90 checkout as he squandered another chance but he was given another as Van Gerwen missed a chance at 112 and then double eight which he chased round the board; allowing 'Rapid' a break back as Van Gerwen began to go to sleep.
This sleep did not last long as he pumped in his tenth maximum on the Evans throw as he attempted to regain control. Despite that, Evans claimed a hold of throw on double 16; as MVG only left himself on 170; this meant that Evans was one away from an unlikely set.
Evans was left on 86; despite that a brilliant 118 brought Van Gerwen back on terms. A 174 was nearly registered null and void as Evans missed 142. Van Gerwen though replied with another 118 to claim victory.
