Danny van Trijp could not pull off another shock at the
World Darts Championship on Friday night. The 25-year-old Dutchman went down 3-0 in sets against Jonny Clayton.
Earlier, Van Trijp had caused a shock by beating former world champion Steve Beaton. Clayton, however, proved a few sizes too big for the man who has a PDC Tour Card for the first time in the next two seasons.
''It just wasn't in the cards,'' Van Trijp acknowledged afterwards. ''Maybe I was already too satisfied after my first round. Then you win against Steve Beaton, who is playing his 32nd PDC World Darts Championship here and really is a legend, and then you get to play against the number seven in the world. With that, the World Championship was already a success. Clayton threw 120 average in that second set? Yeah, what am I supposed to do about that? Maybe I looked up to him a bit too much," Van Trijp admitted.
However, this defeat should not spoil the fun for Van Trijp, who enjoyed his performance at Alexandra Palace. ''This is all new to me, it's all exploring and experiencing. I'm not even upset, maybe I should be, but I feel satisfied. I stood here, which a lot of people can't say, and also won the first round from one of the biggest darts legends. It was a lot of fun."
