The opening day is over at the German Darts Open with Gian van Veen, Ricardo Pietreczko and Luke Woodhouse moving through to the second round.
Pietreczko took the honours against fellow German, Daniel Klose who despite reaching the final of the last ProTour could not carry on the winning feeling into the European Tour. He went down to 'Pikachu' fresh off a good feeling too, with an Ally Pally debut set and maybe the World Grand Prix with a good run this weekend.
He sealed it 6-4 in an absolute battle. But while the former and Hempel moved through, Gabriel Clemens was disposed of by Luke Woodhouse following that.
He survived two match darts as he saw off the German Number One pinching it in the decider 6-5 in an absolute thriller on the European Tour.
But the tie of the night didn't deliver in terms of closeness as Gian van Veen continued his incredible form as of late with a 6-1 win over Simon Whitlock brushing aside 'The Wizard'.
He now faces Nathan Aspinall in the second round. Averaging 95, he hit three 180's and 54.5% on the doubles with a high checkout of 156.
This year, the Euro Tour tournaments will be broadcast by Viaplay for the first time. The afternoon sessions start at 1300 local time, 1200 BST, while the evening sessions start at 1900 local time, 1800 BST
Furthermore, the European Darts Matchplay for British darts fans can be seen via PDCTV. A subscription is required to access this live stream.
During each Euro Tour tournament, £175,000 in prize money is distributed. All qualifiers are guaranteed £1,250, while the top 16 players on the placement list at the German Darts Open will receive £2,500 anyway. However, these 16 players must win their first game in the second round for the prize money to actually count toward the world rankings and other rankings.
Per victory, the prize money earned increases. For example, the finalists already receive a minimum of £12,000. The winner of the tournament goes home with the top prize of 30,000 pounds.
