Nathan Aspinall may have taken the title in Munich, but Andrew Gilding also left the 2026 German Darts Grand Prix with plenty of attention after a memorable run and one standout moment that had the crowd on its feet.
The fourth event of the 2026 PDC European Tour ended with Aspinall beating Danny Noppert 8–5 in the final, but Gilding’s late call-up and run to the quarter-finals proved one of the stories of the weekend.

Late call-up, big impact

Gilding was not even scheduled to compete in Munich. Only after several withdrawals did the 55-year-old get his chance to step in at the last minute. He took full advantage, putting together a strong run to reach the quarter-finals and underlining his ability to deliver on the European Tour stage, despite the fact that his wait for a title goes on.

Moonwalk moment steals the show

The highlight came in his quarter-final against Aspinall. Trailing 3–2, Gilding produced one of the most eye-catching moments of the tournament to pull level.
A ton-plus checkout kept him in the match, but it was how he finished it that caught the attention. As he stepped in for the decisive double, Gilding broke into a brief moonwalk, drawing a huge reaction from the Munich crowd before pinning the finish.
The moment brought the contest back to 3–3 and injected fresh energy into the tie, although Aspinall ultimately regained control to secure a 6–4 victory.

Solid progress in the rankings

Despite the defeat, Gilding’s run still delivered important ranking points. He remains 30th in the world rankings, but has climbed to 24th on the PDC European Tour Order of Merit.
With the top 32 after 15 events qualifying for the European Championship, the Englishman has put himself in a strong early position as the season continues.
