Darts and Whitney Houston are a lethal combination, and that was the case in an exhibition event at the
Sachsen Darts Gala in Leipzig, Germany, where
Gian van Veen and
Nathan Aspinall took on the 'Whitney Houson Challenge' in front of a packed and expected audience gleefully singing along.
It is a challenge that has gone viral on TikTok, and has now found itself onto the stage. The perfect place for these to play out is on the exhibition scene: more of a fun, relaxed environment where the players loosen up and have a laugh on stage while showcasing some world class darts for an intrigued audience.
The challenge was simple. Houston's song 'I will always love you' would be blasted around the arena with the players objective was to hit the board as the chorus commenced. It was a fun task, and the PDC World Darts Championship finalist was first up to the oche.
With popular MC Philip Brzezinski calling the action on stage, van Veen patiently waited for the right moment to fling his dart into the board, teasing an early throw. He then counted down the song in his head, signalling with his hands a countdown from three to when he was set to throw the dart.
He chucked it at the board, and completed the task with flying colours. Unsure at first, he had to get the news confirmed to him before he fist pumped the air in celebration.
Aspinall takes it to the next level
Now was the turn for 'The Asp,' who has always been a showman on the stage, most of the time conducting the fans to 'Mr Brightside' in packed venues across the world in the biggest darting events.
Right at this moment, he was focusing on a different song, a song that he actually seemed to like. So much so that he went over to Brzezinski to ask for his microphone. "You can do whatever you want," was the reply as Aspinall prepared to put on a show for the spectators.
"Start it DJ," he said, expectantly waiting for his opportunity to shine. He sings versus into the microphone before the chorus starts, showing off his singing voice.
He then stepped up to the oche, but completely mis-timed his effort, running off in embarrassment from what was a dreadful effort, especially compared to van Veen's. It was met by laughter from the crowd, who had thoroughly enjoyed this viral challenge. There next focus will be towards the
Winmau World Masters in Milton Keynes, with another major title on the line.
