James Wade has secured his second weekly title of this year’s Premier League Darts campaign after capping off an exceptional night in Dublin with a 6-5 win over league leader Jonny Clayton.
Wade won in Manchester after reaching multiple weekly finals prior and has added to that tally as he all but secures his spot in the Premier League Darts play-offs in Berlin as he came from 5-3 down in a scrappy affair to see off ‘The Ferret’ in a tie where both showed their battling spirit but it was ‘The Machine’ who came out on top.
A 180 and 140 finished with a double 20 saw Wade hold to begin the tie. A 118 in typical fashion from Wade with Clayton sat on 60 to hold saw ‘The Machine’ break and go 2-0 up.
Clayton missed 156 to break but returned with Wade missing 66 to hold and ‘The Ferret’ got the break to make it 2-1.
Clayton made a chronic counting error but Wade couldn’t pounce missing two darts to break and it was a level game at 2-2. ‘The Ferret’ took the lead from there at 3-2 and backed it up on double 18 to make it 4-2.
Wade stopped a mini-rot holding to make it 4-3. An 11-darter to hold though saw Clayton go one away with Wade needing to win all legs remaining.
Clayton missed 81 for the match on the bull and Wade held to make it 5-4. Wade effectively stole the darts as he looked to send it all the way where he’d have the throw.
Clayton hit a 180 to pressure and Wade in usual fashion hit a 118 checkout to send it all the way. Wade went inside on 90 on double 15 and Clayton returned looking at 72 for another chance to win it which he missed on double 20. Wade returned for double four to seal it though next time around.
