Martin Schindler reached a significant milestone last Tuesday, securing his first-ever Players Championship title. The German No. 1 delivered a dominant performance in the final of Players Championship 8, sweeping past Jeffrey de Graaf with an emphatic 8-1 victory and etching his name into the winners’ circle for the first time.

Despite his breakthrough triumph, not everyone was quick to recognize the achievement. Some critics pointed out that Schindler benefited from a relatively modest field, with Kevin Doets (world No. 41) standing as his highest-ranked opponent en route to the title.

Schindler Responds to Critics

Ahead of his European Tour appearance in Göttingen, Schindler addressed the skepticism surrounding his success. Despite finally clinching his first Players Championship title after 220 attempts, he was taken aback by some of the negative reactions on social media.

“I managed to win this Players Championship, and while it wasn’t my best performance, I had the right timing. I was there when I needed to be,” Schindler shared on Instagram.

He questioned why achievements are often scrutinized when fortune plays a role—a reality in the world of darts. “If your opponent misses chances or crucial darts, that’s beyond your control. You just have to focus on your own game.”

Schindler also reflected on the broader tendency to analyze success rather than simply embracing it. “Why do we, as people, feel the need to question or dissect positive outcomes? Of course, we should learn from negative experiences, but we should also accept the good moments and use them as motivation to improve.”

A Realistic Perspective and Looking Ahead

Schindler acknowledged that overthinking is something he himself struggles with at times. He has often produced outstanding performances yet fallen short—this time, the results swung in his favor. Viewing this as a form of sporting balance, he aims to maintain a realistic outlook on his progress.

Grateful for the overwhelming support in recent days, Schindler backed up his success with a strong showing at the European Darts Trophy. He defeated Adam Hunt and Jonny Clayton before narrowly falling to a resurgent Gary Anderson in the last 16.

Next up, Schindler returns to Players Championship action in Leicester on Monday and Tuesday, seeking to build on his recent momentum. With confidence high, the German is eager to prove that he can consistently challenge for titles—not just on the Pro Tour but also against the elite names of the European Tour.
