Sixteen-time world champion Phil Taylor will soon take on teenage world champion Luke Littler in an exhibition match. But whether that is such a good idea, former PDC Tour Card holder Vincent van der Voort has doubts. According to the Dutchman, the level difference has become too big between the pair.
Darts manufacturer Target recently announced that the two English darters will soon compete against each other. The podcast'Darts Draait Door' previewed the exhibition match. "Should you still want that?", podcast host Damian Vlottes wonders. "I don't think so," says Van der Voort. "You don't want to see Taylor humiliated, do you?"
Taylor retired from the professional circuit after the 2018 PDC World Darts Championship, in which he lost the final to Rob Cross. Since then, he made sporadic appearances on the seniors tour, but at the end of last year, plagued by injury, he put a final stop to his career. "It's an uneven battle, isn't it, man?" wondered Van der Voort. "If you do best-of-19 it will be 10-1 or 10-2 for Littler," fears Vlottes. "Or 10-0," says a worried Van der Voort. "Why is Taylor doing this? I really have no idea. Money? I don't think so, he already has plenty of money."
"Taylor must not want this anymore, right? Last year he was also supposed to throw an exhibition against Michael van Gerwen and then they had to shorten the format as well," Van der Voort said. "He felt himself that he couldn't give Michael a match anymore. I don't want to see this at all either."
"I'd rather see a pairs match of those two then than see them against each other," Van der Voort continued. Vlottes then suggested that for that pairing match Taylor and Littler could be paired against, say, Luke Humphries and another darts legend. "Yes, do that," agrees Van der Voort.
