Steve Beaton had his work cut out for him on debut at the 2025 World Seniors Darts Championship on Thursday night. Eventually though, 'The Bronzed Adonis' defeated Colin McGarry 3-2 in his opening match and now gets to take on Paul Hogan.
Beaton had to come back from a 2-0 deficit in sets and in the deciding set he also found himself down 2-0 in legs, surviving missed match darts from his opponent before completing the comeback. "I'm just so happy to get through. I knew it wasn't going to be easy," reflected a relieved Beaton post-match. "I knew it was going to be tough, but I felt good practicing. Then got on stage, and I'm always a bit of a slow starter."
The 60-year-old Englishman handed in his PDC Tour Card early this year and is making his seniors debut at this tournament. "Everyone says got to the Seniors..." Beaton laughs, noting how both Mervyn King and Simon Whitlock were left disappointed on their respective Seniors debuts. "Mervyn played brilliant today. 95 average I think. And I noticed they said "oh Steve's the last one left!'"
After coming through the tough test against McGarry though, Beaton is now dreaming of a Seniors World Championship title at the Circus Tavern, to add to his BDO World Championship from the Lakeside back in 1996.
"I'm going to win it. That's what I'm here for, to win it. You know, I'm not here to be second or anything. I'm here to win," he declares defiantly. "It would absolutely make my day to win this and I'm trying just as much as everybody else."
Beaton voluntarily surrendered his PDC Tour Card early this year, retireing from the professional circuit in the process. "I can't just pack the game up you know. It's in my blood and I still want to play," Beaton concludes. "If I can play for another five or six years, that'd be great. But I actually wanted to slow down."
