Steve Beaton survives early exit at World Seniors Darts Championship debut

Steve Beaton narrowly avoided elimination in his debut at the World Seniors Darts Championship, surviving the first round with a hard-fought victory. 'The Bronzed Adonis' was given a lifeline by his opponent, Colin McGarry, who squandered multiple opportunities to knock Beaton out of the tournament.
Beaton started the match poorly and quickly found himself trailing 2-0 in sets. When McGarry took a 2-1 lead in the third set, Beaton was just one leg away from defeat. However, in the fifth leg of set three, McGarry missed a match dart, allowing Beaton to capitalize with a 94 checkout to claim the set.
McGarry regained control in the fourth set, taking another 2-1 lead. Beaton responded by forcing a deciding leg with a 100 finish. McGarry had a chance to secure victory with an 85 checkout but failed to convert. Beaton seized the opportunity, finishing 78 to level the match at 2-2.
In the decisive set, McGarry surged ahead once more, going 2-1 up after checkouts of 80 and 105. Beaton, however, answered with an 11-darter to force a final leg. McGarry missed yet another match dart, and Beaton closed out the contest with a 20 finish to complete his comeback victory.
Meanwhile, Richie Burnett, the man Beaton defeated in the 1996 BDO World Championship final, also advanced to the second round at Circus Tavern. Burnett emerged victorious in a thrilling five-set battle against Kevin Painter.
Painter, who has been struggling with dartitis for over a year, won the first two sets 3-2. However, Burnett fought back, dominating the third set with a 3-0 win. Painter led 2-1 in the fourth set but was unable to close out the match, allowing Burnett to force a fifth set. The deciding set went down to the wire, with Burnett edging it 3-2 to secure his place in the next round.
Darryl Fitton delivered a commanding performance to reach the last 16, sweeping darts icon Martin Adams 3-0 in sets. Chris Mason claimed the final spot in the second round with a 3-1 victory over Mark Dudbridge.
