Two-time seniora world champion Robert Thornton has secured a spot in the last eight of the 2025 World Seniors Darts Championship in Purfleet. 'The Thorn' won 3-1 in sets over Darryl Fitton in the second round.
Thornton won the first two editions of this event in 2022 and 2023, but lost the title to his compatriot John Henderson last year. At this edition, the two-time major winner at the PDC hopes to still secure his third world title.
He began his match by winning the first set 3-2 after throwing two 15-darters. Fitton then won the second set 3-0, but set three was a 3-1 win for Thornton. Thornton then pressed on and captured the fourth set 3-0 to secure the win.
Leonard Gates will also return to the last eight of this event. Gates, who won three of the four World Seniors majors in 2023, settled with Mike Huntley (3-1) in his first match.
Derek Coulson managed to send another big name home after his sensational victory over Mervyn King (3-1). This time Tony O'Shea was the Welshman's victim. 'Silverback' was defeated 3-0 in sets by Coulson.
Ross Montgomery also secured a spot in the last eight of the 2025 World Seniors Darts Championship. Montgomery fell behind 2-1 in sets against darts legend John Part, but 'The Boss' was able to pull out the victory 3-2 in sets.
