Luke Littler has been the talk of the PDC World Darts Championship and for good reason too as he is through to the Quarter-Finals on his debut at the Alexandra Palace after seeing off the legendary doyen of Dutch Darts, Raymond van Barneveld 4-1 in sets.
Littler was utterly sublime as he produced a 105 average and nine 180's in seeing off Van Barneveld who himself produced one of his best displays in a long time on the big stage but had no answers. The 16-year-old will now play Brendan Dolan for a spot in the semi-finals.
In no time at all, Littler took the opening set 3-1 with a 103.8 average and 3/4 on the doubles. Van Barneveld had no answer to the prowess of the 16-year-old with a 12-darter on double 20 to go 2-0 up for Littler.
Littler looked to be motoring towards a three-set lead. But Van Barneveld produced a 127 checkout and after errors at the outer ring from Littler, experience showed as Barney took out 82 to go 2-1 up.
Van Barneveld continued to find his range but missed two at 71 and Littler returned to break back and hit a 65 checkout to go one away from a 3-0 sets lead. He left 94 after nine darts and laid up double 20 with Barney not on a finish and he was one set away.
A 90 checkout saw Littler level up the fourth set at 1-1. He missed bull for 170 but going for the bull saw Littler miss darts to go one away from the win and Van Barneveld picked his pocket. He missed double 18 for 92 to make it 2-2 but returned to send it all the way.
Littler couldn’t pin 128 and Van Barneveld stayed in business in the tie. In four legs, Littler hit as many 180’s and left 47 after nine darts in a set he threw first in and he went 2-1 up.
On his throw, he hit back-to-back 137's before leaving 170 for the match He looked whether to hit the bull but instead smashed it into double 10 to leave double 15 which he pinned first time for the win.
