Alex Spellman crowned himself the winner at the CDC Cross-Border Challenge last weekend. This title earns Spellman entry into the World Series tournament in New York between May 31-June 1.
The field of participants at the CDC Cross-Border Challenge consisted of the eight best darters from the United States and the eight best from Canada. They faced each other in the first round. Five Canadians and three Americans made it to the quarterfinals. Among others Jules van Dongen, Larry Butler, Leonard Gates and three-time world champion John Part did not make it past the first round.
Spellman had a 5-2 win over Sylvain Bourdeau in the first round. He then defeated Keith Way 5-2. In the semifinals, Spellman triumphed 6-5 against Jake Macmillan, while David Cameron qualified for the final with a 6-4 win over Stowe Buntz. The final was then a 7-6 win for Spellman.
