Dimitri Van den Bergh’s tough spell on the oche continued at the European Darts Trophy, as the Belgian suffered another early exit. The 30-year-old, who has been struggling for consistency in recent months, fell at the first hurdle, losing 6-4 to Ryan Joyce in his opening match. It’s a result that extends his worrying run of form on the European Tour.
Van den Bergh did show glimpses of his old self earlier this year, reaching the semi-finals of the Winmau World Masters, but since then, he has found it difficult to string together positive results. His performances on the floor have been underwhelming, with early exits becoming a regular occurrence. The UK Open provided a rare bright spot as he reached the last 16, but his struggles on the European Tour are particularly concerning. At the Belgian Darts Open—the first Euro Tour event of the season—he was eliminated in his opening match against Martin Schindler, and his latest defeat to Joyce marks his eighth consecutive loss on the European circuit.
Despite his poor run, there are reasons for cautious optimism. While results haven’t gone his way, Van den Bergh’s performance against Joyce was a notable improvement. His average of 98.29 was far from disastrous, suggesting that his game might be heading in the right direction. He’ll have another opportunity to turn things around at the International Darts Open in Riesa, taking place from April 4-6.
His match wasn’t the only example of strong performances going unrewarded last weekend. Peter Wright and Ryan Searle both posted higher averages than their opponents in the second round, yet still found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline. Searle’s 105.62 average wasn’t enough to overcome Gerwyn Price (103.74), as he lost 6-4, while Wright (105.42) was edged out 6-5 by Mike De Decker (105.25). It’s a reminder that while high averages are an encouraging sign, they don’t always translate to victories.
For Van den Bergh, the priority will be to get back to winning ways as soon as possible. With Riesa on the horizon, he’ll be hoping to finally put an end to his European Tour hoodoo and rediscover the form that once made him one of the sport’s most exciting prospects.
Dimitri Van den Bergh is now on a 8-game losing streak on the European Tour and has won only 6 of his last 20 ET games.
