The 2022
Premier League Darts line-up was announced on Monday by the PDC. The field this year consists of Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, James Wade, Michael Smith, Gary Anderson, Jonny Clayton and Joe Cullen.
Cullen claimed the last spot by surprisingly winning the Masters on Sunday night but this led to a change in the line-up.
'The Rockstar' won a mini-battle seemingly between himself,
Rob Cross,
Jose de Sousa and
Dimitri van den Bergh for the final spot.
Cross as a result becomes only the second player to not make the line-up having won a ranking major (European Championship) the year before. This caused many to question the decision due to The Masters not being ranked.
His form in the Premier League Darts has been questionable at times in recent years finishing ninth twice despite last season being a revival for 'Voltage'. It seems he will have to do more to get a spot going forward.
Paul Nicholson is the only other player not to make it having won the Players Championship Finals back in 2010 and after holding onto that stat for over 10 years which is regularly pointed out to 'The Asset', he has a player joining him.
De Sousa is the highest ranked player not in the line-up and is currently seventh. He also missed out having lost in the final of last year's tournament to Jonny Clayton and holding the 180 record.
While Van den Bergh who lost in the second round of the Masters but reached the final of the World Matchplay and World Series Finals last year also missed out.
The popular Belgian who is known as multilingual ticks a lot of boxes for the PDC but has been left out on this occasion likely due to the field decreasing to eight players.
