Durrant won 7-3 against Van Gerwen in an exceptional display with a 104.43 average and 58 percent on his doubles in what is a crushing defeat for the World Number One.
The first four legs went with throw but a pivotal moment early on saw Durrant break throw with a 167 checkout to lead 3-2. Missed darts at double were punished by Durrant as he held throw to claim a 4-2 advantage.
He streaked further clear with another break of throw hitting double 12 to make it 5-2 and a hold of throw saw that dominance extended as he was guaranteed at least a point.
Durrant gave Van Gerwen a potential late chance as he missed a match dart at the bullseye and Van Gerwen stayed alive at 6-3 behind. But a clinical 68 checkout saw Durrant claim victory to set a benchmark at the top of the standings.
