Defending final money from two years ago,
Gerwyn Price got off to a superb start at the 2024
World Matchplay after health doubts prior to the tournament put him on upset watch against
Daryl Gurney.
But it wasn't to be for 'Superchin' who valiantly fought back from 5-1 down to ask the question. A late surge though from Price saw him produce in particular on the outer ring with 10/17 (58.8%) as well as two ton plus checkouts. He also hit a 99 average and five 180's in a great start.
A tough tie awaits too as he faces either Ross Smith or Josh Rock who face off in a standout first round clash and both are in good form. As well as being proficient power scorers so Price will need to be on his game. But for the first round, it is job done for 'The Iceman'.
Gurney missed 101 on double 18 for the opening leg. But Price didn’t get a dart as he hit double 19 by accident when it looked like he was going to get a shot at 116 and Gurney mopped up to go into the lead.
Price pinned double six for a 12-darter to hit back and make it 1-1. Gurney was left frustrated missing 54 for a hold and Price broke to go 2-1 up. Price held throw pinning double four for a 3-1 lead.
Price thumped in a 130 checkout on the bull and let out a huge roar for a 4-1 lead at the first break. Gurney punished Price with a last dart double nine after Price missed a key opportunity to hold throw and go 5-1 up.
Price continued to go off the boil and Gurney pinned double six to go 5-3 up and he was throwing to go within one. He hit 174 and set up double 16 with Price needing 164 which he didn’t get a shot at and Gurney made it 5-4. Price missed 72 on double 20 but Gurney didn’t capitalise and ‘The Iceman’ at the break made it 6-4.
A 79 checkout saw Price go 7-4 up. He pinned double 20 to go two away at 8-4. A 108 checkout on double 20 saw him go one away and he was throwing for the win. After nine darts, Price left 47 for the match and he pinned double 20.
