The current game of
Michael van Gerwen going into the World Darts Championship was questioned with recent results seeing Luke Humphries as the Ally Pally favourite, but the game is still very much there after a record average at the
Players Championship Finals.
Van Gerwen who will look for an eighth Players Championship Finals title this weekend usually has Minehead as a happy hunting ground and thumped in a 118 average to thrash Ross Smith on the main stage 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Green Machine hit three 180's, two ton plus checkouts and was nearly flawless on the doubles hitting 85.7% to give Smith no chance. He showed his intentions early on with a 10-darter on double 18.
He followed that up after Smith had missed darts for the leg with the ultimate steal as he went 17, 20 and bull for an 87 checkout. A 121 checkout on double 16 going bull, treble 13 and double 16 followed.
Before an 11 and 12 darter including a 124 on the bull as he romped through the legs. Smith finally got on the board but this was a mere rot stopper as MVG finished it with a 12-darter on double eight. A player with his game in a healthy place right now.
He smashes the previous record of 112.05 from Dirk van Duijvenbode last year, with the previous mark before that set 10 years ago this time around in 111.58 by Phil Taylor in the 2013 Quarter-Final.
Away from the main stage also, Brendan Dolan got the better of Maik Kuivenhoven 6-5. While Rob Cross headed out after a good week in Wolverhampton, he fell to Luke Woodhouse 6-3.
